PENCIL skulptures by: Jennifer Maestre

"PELT"
This is one of Maestre's first pencil sculptures, which she made in 1999 and gave to a good friend as a wedding present. "It is a woven fabric of pencils, like all my sculptures, but unlike most has no rigidity at all," she says. "It can be manipulated into different forms, just like a piece of fabric."

"SEETHE"
This is another sculpture Maestre's gallery asked her to make for the Fuller Craft Museum's basket show. The 9" x 14" x 13" work has since been sold. "I called it ?Seethe? because it reminds me of lava bubbling out of a volcano," she says.

"IBENTINA"
Maestre named this 13" x 10" x 10" work, which she made and sold in 2008, after an ancient Egyptian sculpture. "I've been waiting to make a sculpture worthy of the name, and here she is," she says. "I think the Ibentina is my favorite pencil sculpture."

"AURORA"

"I have been obsessed with the idea of the elements of legs and petals, but they are technically very tricky and I am still experimenting," says Maestre. In fact, the 7" x 17" x 17" sculpture, which Maestre made for a basket show at the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, Massachusetts, took her several attempts to get right. "I was trying to make a floating element in the center, with petals unfolding like sun rays."

"THRENODY"

This 12" x 12" x 12" sculpture?s name means a song or hymn of mourning?because it seems to be lamenting loss, in Maestre's opinion. It's been called a gorilla, frog and Egyptian mask, among other things, which is why Maestre likes it. "I don't want people to be banged over the head with what I think my art is?I love it when they bring their own interpretation."

"KRAKEN"

This 14" x 12" x 12" creature was inspired by jellyfish, octopuses and sea monsters. "I spent about two months on this one, on and off," Maestre says. "My hands really start to hurt if I don't take breaks and give them a rest." It's on display at Mobilia Gallery.

"In the last two decades a bizarre and violent musical subculture called black metal has emerged in Norway. It's roots stem from a heady blend of horror films, extreme heavy metal music, Satanism, pagan mythology, and adolescent angst. In the early-mid 1990's, members of this extremist underground committed murder, burned down medieval wooden churches, and desecrated graveyards. What started as a juvenile frenzy came to symbolize the start of a war against Christianity, a return to the worship of the ancient Norse gods, and the complete rejection of mainstream society. I spent seven years photographing this insulated and secretive community. " - Peter Beste

Genious pencil strokes by MARCO TAVARNESI

NORSK:

ENGLISH:
During our stay in Italy during Mittelmoda, one of the finalists Matteo Jorge Serra's boyfriend was also there - Marco Tavarnesi, also known as "Sospensorio". He was constantly drawing and scribling on his pad of paper, and in seconds he created unbelieveably gorgeous sketches. During the show he also sketched up silhouettes and details from each collection. I am just amazed on how he managed to catch the essence of each outfit in shape of one line. No eraser! Hopefully he'll add some of those drawings to his flickr album as well. Well, here I've posted some of his work. It was serioulsly difficult to pick just some to show, so I advice you to check out all of it on his flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sospensorio/

Electric Voodoo's MITTELMODA 2010

Photo: Steven Stieng

NORSK:

///

ENGLISH:
A part of participating in the competition Mittelmoda was to present our collection in front of a high-profiled jury. (The list of this years jury members is at the bottom of THIS page.) That my nerves were in high-gear is not a exaggeration, but I got through it alive and even standing up straight. What I remember from it is another thing. But I've added some pictures(proof!) which I found on Moda-online.
Have also added some other pictures from the stay in Italy. Just to give you a taste of how my collection had it down there.
Later that evening was the climax - the show! At the bottom of this post I've added a picture from it which I've gotten from Norwegian Fashion.

Photo: Steven Stieng
From Moda-online:

Part of presentation: "You can compare the process of getting to know a song. After the first time you've listened to it you probably just remember the refrain, the main riff or the most catchy lines - you remember the silhouette and the clearest details.
After a couple of times you know more of the words and tensions - and it starts to reveal itself.
And after a while, when you know the song in and out, you can see right through the secrets it hid at first."

Julius S/S 2011

NORSK:

After I saw Julius' F/W 2010 show earlier this year, this brand flew right to the top among my favourites. The urban, dark and gloomy is still very clear, together with the drapings, raw edges and long silhouettes. They're staying steady on top among my personal favourites!

MUSIC ACCESSORIES by Ludvig Fauske Grindem

NORSK:
Etter tips frå Amanda Adomaitis fann eg ein annan musikkelskande norsk designar. I form av musikktilbehør har Ludvig Fauske Grindem laga ein nydeleg kolleksjon bygga over inspirasjon frå legendariske sjeler som alle enda livet i ein alder av 27 år: Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin og Brian Jones. Slike inspirasjonskilder varmar hjarta mitt. Vakkert!

The winner of Mittelmoda 2010, AMANDA GROGAN from Ireland

NORSK:
Nesten litt absurd. Men mest fantastisk!

Fantastisk jente. Vi delte faktisk rom der nede! Hoho! Gratulerer Amanda, you rock!

///

ENGLISH:

I am back from Italy and I am more eager and inspired than ever! Im still somwhere up in the sky and still think its surreal that I've been a finalist at Mittelmoda. Almost a bit absurd. But most of all amazing! The entire stay and not least all of the people down there was just awesome. I sure indeed have made myself some friends for life during those three days. <3

My next posts will most probably be affected by my stay in Italy, but first of all I need to get some good pictures. Luckily photographer Steven Stieng from Norwegian Fashion was down there shooting everything. Important!

The winner of Mittelmoda 2010 was AMANDA GROGAN from Ireland. An absolutely well deserved victory! I am so happy and proud of her. Her collection is through, beautiful and well balanced. Inspired by the work of artist Barry Le Va, who had created work using the concept of a crime scene installation. Its not just Amandas collection which is great, but her personality is also amazing! Vi acctually shared hotel room. Hoho, I know a superstar! Congratulations Amanda, you rock!

I will as I said post more photos eventually, and also more info about the designers and their collections that they showed down there. Stay tuned!
